One more week in Suwon?

1/20-26
Monday was a productive PDAY. In the morning, during my email time, I was able to finish my fall semester application for BYU! Booyah~ with the help of my dad and President Morrise I was able to have it in a couple weeks before the due date. After email we went shopping for a few things. It was fun. Lately, it has been awesome having a positive spirit in mine and Sister Tovar's relationship. Today we enjoyed each other's company and were well prepared for our lesson tonight.

The lesson was with our three new investigators. They are such cool people! Unlike last time I made sure to keep each part to 30 minutes. English was easy, but the gospel portion was hard. It is hard to anticipate how long it will take us to speak or form sentences. Having patience with my companion in lessons has been a huge blessing. Also, watching her work so hard has helped me to recognize how far I have come because I remember being a greenie all too well (as far as speaking Korean goes). Anyway, we weren't able to teach much, because time was running out so I quickly assigned them homework for both English and gospel and ended with my testimony. I hope they felt the spirit. They didn't seem too interested especially when I tried asking them questions. Oh well, I have faith in them. I'm excited to teach them again on Friday.

Tuesday was another good day as a companionship. I love when my companion is happy because then I am happy. We had a fun appointment with a member at 1PM. We got lost but eventually grabbed a taxi. She fed us lunch, so delicious! The woman really loves English so she was asking me the names of the many side dishes she had served. Sister Tovar hates knowing what she is eating so it wasn't a pleasant meal for her, but the member and I had a pretty awesome conversation. Man it was so great. Because time was running out we shared a short message and left. The rest of the day was pretty standard. By the end of the day, it was another English class. I really love the kids that come. Sister Tovar does an okay job of teaching them, she is still learning to speak more simply and concisely. My job is to sit with them and try to keep them focused. I always enjoy myself. During and after English class something changed in my companion and she was in another bad mood. What gives? Can our companionship only be decent for a day and a half? I tried talking to her, but she didn't want to- sweet! I went to bed annoyed.

Wednesday I woke hoping today would be better than yesterday. My personal study was awesome!! I finished reading the Doctrine and Covenants and found a gem in section 138:30. It says:

"But behold, from among the righteous, he organized his forces and appointed messengers, clothed with power and authority, and commissioned them to go forth and carry the light of the gospel"

That is us! All members and missionaries alike! We have the power and authority from God to help bring this magnificent gospel to the world. Man, it fired me up. Unfortunately my companionship wasn't as happy as I was. When we get like this, I get into an "enduring" mode where I'm just trying to get through the day- not a fun way to live. Sister Tovar still wasn't willing to talk about anything or even give me a hint to what was wrong. Instead she locked herself in another room for all of her studies. Soon it was time to meet the district for lunch before our meeting. On our way she was walking as fast as she could and maintained about a two-block distance ahead of me and the rest of the district. I was walking next to my district leader, my glazed-over eyes with annoyance. Am I really that unbearable? He didn't want to pry, but he told me that he has been there and that there was only a week and a half left until transfers. I smiled and said, "I know, 15 days, she reminded me today."

Lunch and training went well. Each companionship was given the opportunity to stand up and ask the district for ideas and suggestions with problems that had arose with current investigators. Most companionships just complained and never got to a question for the district to ponder. I hate when people approach a situation like that- with such a negative attitude. It always reminds me of my marketing professors that tell us, "we can't sell a product to everyone, but instead we have to find a specific group to focus on." Same with asking for advice. If there was an answer to fix everything, it would be in Preach My Gospel. But because every investigator and person is different, we have to be more aware of small things we can improve little by little. After all, what does Alma say? "By small and simple things are great things brought to pass." So, one answered question or suggestion at a time, we can all become better teachers.

My question was how to teach all three of our investigator's different needs in under 30 minutes. The district recommended we do group work. For example, assign the same chapter to read and prepare different questions for each to answer. I like it! After the meeting Sister Tovar did pass off with Elder Breckwoldt. She anticipated it taking 10-15 minutes buttt 90 minutes later she finished haha. I feel so bad for elders that are district leaders for greenies, their time is taken up by all of this pass off stuff. I mean it's for a good cause, but I would probably get annoyed.

We had an appointment with a member scheduled that we were already running late for. Sister Tovar felt bad so she volunteered to pay for a taxi. We were still late but only by about five minutes. The member and her daughter helped us out A LOT! Even though I mostly let my companion practice her lesson, I learned so much from just listening to them respond. I'm finally understand these people no matter how fast they speak!

The day ended with interviews. President and Sister Morrise traveled to each district in our zone today in order to meet with each missionary. My interview with President was okay. He asked everyone to prepare a Book of Mormon scripture to share, I chose a favorite found in 2 Nephi 32:2.
"Do ye not remember that I said unto you that after ye had received the Holy Ghost ye could speak with the tongue of angels? And now, how could ye speak with the tongue of angels save it were by the Holy Ghost?"
(verses 1-5 are scripture mastery, but I still recommend you to reread it). He listened but then we went off on a rant that sounded like he had said it over 100 times already. I still love him, but I was sad not to be able to talk to him about more meaningful things. Oh well, I can have another opportunity in two more transfers. AKA three months :/

Thursday was standard. Studies, less-active member visits, and English class. One noteworthy event was a visit to 이이순S (Sister Lee)'s house. We have never met her and were mostly planning to confirm a bad address, but someone answered the door! It was her adult son. She wasn't home but he was there for the day with his 5 year old daughter. I did my standard door approach, "Does [this person] live here?" "No." "Do you know [this person]?" Normally people say no, but this time it was a yes! A hesitant yes, but a yes nonetheless. He is a less-active member himself and let us in. We were able to talk about the changes that have happened to the Suwon Stake since it was established in 1971. Since I feel like I've been here forever, we actually had a good conversation and I updated him on the combined wards and new bishop. He (김형진B) is crazy busy with work and still has a testimony. He plans to become an active member in about five years when his work won't require him to work Sundays. It's sad but he's a great man and father. He even shared with us his favorite church book that he reads on occasion. We shared a short message and left him with a note to give his mother. It was a good visit! Just before English class we had a 20 minute lesson with a member, 이영희S (Sister Lee). She was so kind and brought us a bunch of choco-pies. Too delicious! She was also so helpful with a few phrases that I had been working on for our upcoming lesson. English class after was so fun. 10 kids came today and they all love me! Seriously, Koreans don't hug often but so many of my kids greet me with a hug every time we see each other at class or on the street, it make me feel so loved. I love them.

Friday was a crappy day. It started well with our lesson. 김지원B, 김지은S, and 채두원B are so cool. The English part went longer than usual because 김지원B (Brother Lee)'s mother (김은희S) made us 떡국, a traditional dish eaten for the Chinese New Year- it means you gain a year when you eat it ha. It was yummy and our English free talking was so fun! The lesson portion went well too. We watched 'The Restoration' video together and talked a little about the Book of Mormon and prayer before time ran out. They all committed to pray tonight and 김지원B even prayed to end the lesson! He was reluctant but it was great.

When we were home it was time for weekly planning; a three hour segment provided for our companionship to plan out the week together. Since my companion is preparing for her senior week, I asked her to be in charge, but it didn't go so well. She is back to thinking that I hate her so she refused to even participate. By the end of planning I was desperately trying to ask for things we could do to improve. I surprised myself with my level of patience but it was for naught because it literally turned into me begging her to stop enduring and start trying. Her suggestion was "Wwe just need to survive until transfer calls because then when I know we won't be together, this might be more bearable." Sweet... 11 more days.

Saturday was good. It got off to a slow start because Sister Tovar couldn't tell up from down so we took a million buses haha. While she took us in circles, I just talking to people- a total of 18 solid back and forth, more than 5 minute conversations. One time Sister Tovar even took a step back and said, "Wow, you just had a whole conversation in Korean!" Uhh ehh 😎 I'm pretty proud to say the least. Also a hand full of people asked me if I was Russian today... what's up that? Anyway it was a good day talking with people. The end of the day was spent with a less-active member, 김자영S (Sister Kim). She hasn't been coming to church, even with us banging on her door each Sunday. Tonight she felt bad that we have invested so much time in her so she took us to dinner. A seafood dinner! It was all raw or boiled. The second we walked in I looked at Sister Tovar and she wanted to die. She hates seafood and all fish... I really took one for the team tonight by eating so much and insisting that I serve everyone. Sister Kim just thought I was being kind but Sister Tovar picked up on my scheme. Sister Tovar ended up eating the smallest amount and the most mild of fish. I enjoyed most of the food but sheesh, the things I do for my companions. The night ended with a standard missionary coordinating meeting. I have been in this ward longer than him (이재현B) which means I know more about these members than he does. When missionaries ask for suggestions he always looks at me and wait for my thought and opinion. Also, we got to talking about transfers and he said that he can't afford to have me leave. Felt good to know I was wanted slash needed.

Sunday was a good day. First was preparation for the various lessons that we had scheduled. First was with the same member before church, 오은숙S (Sister Oh). Her son promised not to dominate the conversation but he just gets so excited and would speak, have us read, speak, ask for testimonies, speak, and so on ha. It was a good meeting but I want to better understand her needs and what she wants to learn. Maybe I'll text or call her his week.

Church was good except for my companion not really doing an awesome job of showing the ward that we are unified as a companionship. I never know where she disappears to when I get to talking to people and during our meetings and appointments she looks like she would rather be dead than sitting next to me. This is really hard.

After church we ate dinner at home then left to spend the night talking to people on the street. We made a pitstop at 신숙희S (Sister Shin)'s house. It has been a month since she has kept an appointment or promise with us. It's super sad so we dropped off some homemade sugar cookies, a note with our testimonies, and a goodbye note that essentially said to call us when you have time to meet. It was sad but necessary.

I hope everyone had a great week!! 사랑해요! I love you! 보고싶어요! I miss you! I am so grateful for everyone that loves and supports me. I pray and thank my Heavenly Father for all of you every single night. 최고이어요! You're the best!

Loosing Myself

1/13-20
Monday wasn't PDAY so instead of enjoying relaxing day, we filled our time with a lot of traveling. Today, I was scheduled to receive my blood test results. After talking things over with the specialist and area-missionary doctor, all is well. A few of my blood levels are high, but they said it isn't anything to worry about. Phew! I do have to check up on it in a few months, but for now all is well.

Most of the day was over after that, we ended up talking to a bunch of people on the way though. For the evening we went looking for less-active members again. Since our bus cards are close to empty, we decided to walk. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise because we met this lady, 손명숙S (Mrs. Sohn). She was so lovely! Her house happened to be in the same complex that we were searching for. It made is easier to just follow and have a nice conversation with her. I thought it was a golden opportunity to try out the new street lesson standard too. At the end of our 30 minute walk together it ended up failing, but I did receive her number and a, "Maybe call me in three months" haha. Baby steps right?

Tuesday was a typical day. All day was dedicated to finding our beloved less-actives. No one happened to be home, but I am getting really good at my door approach and leaving notes. I hope one day these members understand how much we miss and search for them... The end of the day was English class. Because my companion and I clash so much in teaching style, I've asked her to take over teaching the class. Of course I'll be there to help her, but hopefully this will help us have less contention.

I really hate living like this. I came to serve The Lord and I feel like I'm not even worthy of the spirit, because there is no common ground between us. I really am trying to understand her but a good day for me is bad day for her and vice versa. Ugh this week I received my release date and I am SOO ready to start working at full speed!! All I need is a companion that will be on board.... I miss 윤현미 자매님 (Sister Yoon).

Wednesday was scheduled to be a pretty busy day, I was excited. We met up with the district for lunch at a tiny Korean restaurant. We ordered four kinds of soup to share- so delicious!! 김지찌개 (Kimchee soup) and 된장찌개 (it means bean-paste soup- very tradition dish) were my favorites. Almost every restaurant that I go to they always warn me of the spiciness, but what they don't realize is I can handle it haha. In response I always tell them that I am Korean- they laugh every time. After lunch was district meeting. Elder Breckwoldt really loves mormon.org so he always shows videos that he finds on there. Today we watched The Patterns of Light by David A. Bednar. He trained about having the light of Christ and how to invite the spirit more powerfully as we teach and testify. He is a good teacher, it was awesome.

During the meeting, I had to step out because a member, who we had an appointment with, needed to reschedule. So after the meeting, we spent time talking to people on the street until our meal appointment. Sister Tovar actually scheduled this and when we arrived it wasn't meant to be a meal appointment- awkward! Instead Sister Tovar practiced teaching the family a principle she is preparing to passoff. Eventually the family felt bad and just ordered pizza. It was good, but I really am not a fan of cheese nowadays. Koreans are pretty creative when it comes to pizza so there was the normal cheese on top, scoops of cream cheese dabbled all over, cheese sauce squirted on the top, and a cheese-filled crust. I felt nauseous after a couple pieces. Lucky Sister Tovar is more like a vacuum when it comes to that kind of food so I didn't have to force down anymore to show my appreciation. After we left, our next appointment fell through. We ended up riding a series of busses on our way home. Ended not so busy after all, bummer.

Thursday was TEMPLE DAY! As such we had to wake up early to make it to the temple by 8:30AM. The session was awesome! I love the spirit and power of prayer!! I am so grateful for the opportunity to attend the temple once a transfer. I think The Lord knew I would need extra help on my mission so He made sure I was near a temple. Seriously, among the craziness of the city and the world in general, NOTHING beats the peace you feel when you are in a House of The Lord!

After the temple, the missionaries gathered in the parking lot where Sister Morrise was handing out mail!! FINALLY my Christmas package from my family arrived! It was mailed by my Mom December 8th.  It's January 16th today.  Argh!!  For the last few weeks I have really been getting depressed about still not having anything from home, but today I opened that sucker as fast as I could. I hardly cared what was inside, I was just SO excited to hold anything that had come from my amazing family. I miss them a lot! That statement doesn't do it justice for how much I miss them, but I hope they know when I say a lot, I mean A LOT! Anyway, next was lunch. Like every other temple trip I was fasting so I didn't partake in their delicious Shabu-Shabu meal. Instead, I read and reread the Christmas letter from my family. Gosh I love them.

The sisters from the zone were planning to go shopping in Gangnam after lunch, so we followed. After a 30 minute subway trip, I was disappointed. Only five minutes in, I was bored haha. Sister Tovar was too, so we left. On our way back I wasn't that excited to ride a series of subways home but somewhere I found it in me to smile. Once I got us off the first line, an old-Korean grandpa was walking next to me so I said hello. He said "hi" back and it was the beginning of an awesome conversation. We walked and talked and happened to be waiting for the same subway. Because I was carrying a package he told me to take a seat on a nearby bench. It is Korean culture to always do what someone older than you say- so I resisted at first, but eventually obeyed. As I sat a few of the grandmas around me joined our conversation as we informed this old man all about the Book of Mormon. Seriously it was an amazing conversation! Soon the grandmas left and it was just us again. When I stood up for the approaching subway, this man pulled out a pen and wrote his name (김춘식) and number on the box I was holding. I asked him if this week he would have time to learn more about our gospel, he said, "Yes! I have time Saturday and Sunday." I then invited him to church on Sunday at 2PM! Once we boarded the subway, I quickly called the elders to receive the church address. As soon as I received it, I forwarded it to him, he committed to come and he politely said, "Okay, thank you. I have to get off now." And off he went just in time for the subway-doors to close behind him. Talk about perfect timing and a major blessing! It was so AWESOME!

The rest of the day we did PDAY stuff- I got a much needed haircut, we picked up some food for the house, and went home to relax for a few minutes. After the day ended, I reopened my Christmas package again and tried on every pair of under armor leggings and shirts, a beautiful new bracelet, and some sweet down-feather-moon boots from my pa. My companion was a little confused as to what they were but I know she was just jealous. I always made fun of my father when he wore his blue pair around the house, but NOW I understand why they are so awesome!

Unfortunately my happiness was interrupted by some contention with my companion. I'll be short and say it was not a fun night. She opened cans on cans of worms of issues she had with me and our relationship. Anyway, it was after midnight when we finally stopped and decided to be done. People always warned me that missionary life has ups and downs- sometimes it changes very quickly even. Tonight was probably the most dramatic that I've had. It was hard. I miss being home.

Friday started the way yesterday ended. We had a lesson with three potential investigators to prepare for and we did NOT have the spirit. I was so stressed! Luckily the family lived closer than we thought so Sister Tovar and I had about 30 minutes to walk around, talk to people, and get over ourselves. By the time we arrived to the appointment we were both in better moods. We were quickly ushered in my the parents to greet there 23 year old son 김지원B (Brother Kim), his long-time friend 김지은S (Sister Kim-23), and her boyfriend 채두원B (Brother Chay-25).

Quick side note: December 28, 2013 was the day we initially met 김은희S (Sister Kim), the mother, on the street as Sister Tovar and I waited for a bus to visit 신숙희S (Sister Shin). It was an awesome street conversation and look what it has turned into?! Three amazingly brilliant, receptive, willing to learn, and not to mention good-looking people.

I feel so blessed. Not only are they regular students at English class now, but also our three newest investigators! The lesson went really well. The spirit was definitely present. When we finished, we were on our way out until the mother stopped us to ask if we had had lunch yet. By that time it was 1:30PM and I was about ready to run home because I was so hungry. I barely had time to answer before she made a decision and informed us that we would be coming to lunch with her family and her son's friends. She wasted no time linking her arms in mine and my companion's as we walked a few blocks to eat together. It was a hilarious meal. This Korean family gets sarcasm! It is rare that Korean find me funny but today it was so much fun. I love them all so much!!! God is really blessing us. I hardly feel worthy of it but I am SO grateful!

When we got home, we were scheduled to have weekly planning. Once we began it all went down hill. The difference of opinion was taken personally and turned into bickering which evolved to fighting about the core of our companion issues... So in my personal study I have learned the importance of keeping a record of my life via journal for my future posterity... I am super embarrassed that at the age of 24 (Korean age- 22 international age) I am still bickering and fighting like I am in high school. I swear I've matured at least a little. Anyway it was a bad situation. When things began calming back down, I took a deep breath, said a prayer, and decided that then wasn't the time to continue because we were so far from having the spirit with us to plan. Instead, I thought it would be best to leave the house and talk to people. We both agreed that when we are teaching and talking to people, we forget about ourselves and our companionship differences. So maybe it was selfish for us to take up people's time- but we REALLY needed their help. Long story short, it worked and when we came back for planning we made pretty awesome plans and goals for the week. This companionship is pretty tough but today I feel like God helped open my eyes for how we can make this work- not just endure but really be an effective companionship.

Saturday was a fantastic day! We spent 6 straight hours on the streets traveling to less-active members houses and talking to people on our way. Typically I would dread that long amount of time doing the same thing but I was stoked today. Sister Tovar was in a good mood too so it made for a pleasant day together. We ended talking to almost 40 people! Of course we talked to more but we had almost 40 solid conversations. I was so proud of us. For dinner we had a meal appointment with 안순안S (Sister Ahn) a member from the ward. She is the sweetest old grandma! Her and her husband live above his carpenter shop. Their house is so old and super chilly nowadays. After we ate, Sister Ahn made us all sit on the heated floor-mat in a circle with one blanket covering our laps. It was a little awkward sharing the blanket with elders and two men from the ward but hey, it was warm! And beside we were all cross-legged and not touching so that counts for something ha. All in all, it was a good meal and day as a whole.

Sunday was stressful! In the morning I had to prepare for a talk for me to deliver TODAY at church... What the? I felt prepared and I think I did okay. It was all about missionary work and my personal study in Doctrine and Covenants section 133 and Elder Edward Dube's talking from October 2013 conference. The congregation wasn't a lively bunch but I hope someone listening enjoyed it. If no one else, I was pretty impressed with my Korean.

The rest of church was pretty average. I was disappointed that none of our investigators were able to make it, next week will be better! We did however have a good lesson with 오은숙S (Sister Oh), Taeho's mother. I had ordered a jumbo-size triple combination, which by the way weights more than me I think, which we gave to her. The smile on her face was so gratifying!! She was beside herself with happiness. It's so refreshing to see someone be so excited to read and receive these scriptures. Happy missionary moments. Her son did most of the talking but it went well.

After church, all the greenie missionaries attended Korean class while I went into another room to practice teaching the first lesson to a member. Again, I am blown away how much Korean I can muster up to teach a productive lesson. It was great. When that was finished, Sister Tovar and I went to our bishops house for dinner. It was also an opportunity for Sister Tovar to practice her principles that she is preparing to passoff next week. We also met our goal of having 120 solid conversations with people this week. It feels good to achieve a goal. This week was a productive week!

I hope all is well where all of you are. I love and miss you. Have a great week! Also, by Wednesday I should be done reading the Doctrine and Covenants so if anyone feels so inclined to send a miniature Bible to me... That would be very kind ha. One of my goals before the year ends (and hopefully my mission) I want to have read all of the standards works again. 감사합니다! ^^

More Blood Tests

1/6-12
Monday was PDAY, but yesterday at church when the relief society was asking for volunteers to participate in their weekly service project not enough people were available. As a service missionary, I rose my hand to volunteer me and Sister Tovar.  Sister Tovar was not to happy, but it ended up being really awesome. I've gone before and for two hours we serve food to the needy citizens of the community. Today they asked Sister Tovar and I to be on the floor cleaning and gathering the trays when people were finished eating. It was a lot of fun. I think I was asked over 50 times if I was Russian.  I was complimented on my hair and skin maybe over 100 times haha. It was fun. On top of that some members from my old ward showed up to help as well. I love seeing them!! When I saw 이정숙S (Sister Lee) or my Korean mother, she would not stop pulling me in for hugs. It was cool to actually be able to hold more of a conversation with her. I love her. When everything was clean and everyone cleared out, we left with 최연숙S (Sister Choi) who is the member that basically lives next door to us. She wanted to walk home together. She lead the way and took us on the long scenic route. I really enjoyed all of the history and such that she was telling us. But of course Sister Tovar was dragging her feet the whole way. I know she was bummed to be spending her only PDAY doing more missionary work. One day she'll realize that it never stops.

The rest of the day was spent at the church so that she could play board games with the elders. I found a ukulele and played to my little hearts content. Maybe it was annoying for everyone else because I only know "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" haha. Oh well, it was relaxing. Next was YSA FHE. Tonight we went to a meat buffet called "Meating." Cute right? It was interesting. They literally had a buffet of raw meat that you take to your table to cook. I don't know if I'm a huge fan, but at least I tried it. 이상훈B (Hoon) and 정태호B (Taeho) were the only ones to come, but they were a lot of fun.

Tuesday was interesting. Remember that blood test that signaled something was wrong with my liver? Well today was the day I was going back for a followup blood test. I'm still not clear on the meanings but my ALT level raised from 46 to 88. When that level is in the 100's it normally means that the patient has hepatitis... Mine isn't that serious yet, but it is increasing. I don't feel sick or worried so tomorrow I'll receive the specialist's advice of what to do next. That took a majority of the day after traveling to and from the hospital. On our way home we stopped for groceries to make dinner. After eating we had English class. Nothing eventual happened except that someone we met on the street showed up! She not only came but brought her whole family! I talked with them and they want to start the 30/30 program! Blessing! Between talking to them, trying to talk with my students after class, and preparing for the spiritual message was a lot. It was stressful. Everything worked out in the end. It was a good day.

Wednesday was another day spent visiting less-active members. One member, 이은혜S (Sister Lee) was pretty pregnant for a long, long time it seemed. Her belly was HUGE. Just after Christmas she went into labor. She was a month early. Her beautiful baby only lived for two hours. I'm not sure if there were more complications, but her family hasn't been to church since. Today we went to visit. No one was home. We left a note and message card, but I am really worried about them. As for other visits, he didn't have any success. Previously, Sister Tovar passed off with Elder Breckwoldt. Today she taught the lesson of the restoration in English. It took over and hour and a half! What the? Elder Giles and I played ping pong. I bettered my smash so it wasn't all a waste of time. Ha ha Our night ended at 서은효S (Summer's) house. Saturday is her birthday and she leaves for vacation to Sri Lanka on Sunday. Sister Tovar and I brought a small cake, a travel size Book of Mormon, and homemade case for it. She was touched. However she isn't sure that she will take it because she says she is worried about offending the people she visits, because it is a Buddhist country. I really hope she takes it! We bore strong testimony and left her to pack. I felt the spirit pretty strong, I hope she did too.

Thursday was zone training. I organized lunch as usual, it was delicious. The training was awesome. Elder Oh and Pope have some high hopes for the zone. They encouraged us to ask ourselves, "Are we doing enough?" They made a lot of references the scripture Romans 12:1-2 that says,
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
I thought this scripture was interesting but as they continued with the training they told us that our living sacrifice is our works and how we choose to spend our time. It was really motivational. At the end they described the new standards for counting our stats. They seem pretty strict, but I hope they lead to more immediate success. The biggest change was to street lessons. It order for us to count one  we will need to have taught at least three gospel principles, received their phone number, and set a return appointment. So much! I'm ready to find those whom The Lord has prepared!

After training I practiced teaching Elder Breckwoldt the plan of Salvation. We always get side tract, but it's always a productive, extended language study haha. When I finished, I found Sister Bassett waiting for me. Time for another split! We head home for dinner and then English class. It was so fun being with someone that actually liked me. It was like night and day compared to my current companion. Sister Bassett is so awesome, I love her. English class was crazy! Today I think all of my students ate a whole candy store each. It was game day but gezz it was out of control. Sister Bassett was amazed that I dealt with them twice a week haha. I love them so much though.

Friday went by so quickly. After morning studies, we unsplit, and did weekly planning. It was productive but I didn't like being inside for so long. When we finished it was 5PM! We soon met up with 정영헌E and Elder Robinson for a meal appointment at 임흥직B (Brother Lim) and his wife 김백희S (Sister Kim's) house. It was so delicious!! They fed us pig feet. The members laughed so hard when Sister Tovar looked like she was going to throw up after they told her what she ate. It was hilarious. When it came time for the spiritual thought, the members asked each missionary to share a short message. Even though it was on the spot I am still amazed that I was able to share what I learned in personal study that morning.. IN KOREAN. I'm so grateful for the spirit! My thought was this: This transfer I have been studying and plan to finish reading The Doctrine and Covenants volume of scripture. Today specifically I was impressed by the verse 110:5 which reads,
"Behold, your sins are forgiven you; you are clean before me; therefore, lift up your heads and rejoice."
I found this to be interesting because in this section as well as surrounding section, Joseph Smith and his apostles are receiving visions and guidance from on High of how to carry out The Lord's work. Each time they are visited by God or Jesus Christ, They first state who they are. Then They clarify that those in their presence are clean and free of sin. Of course these men were still imperfect men, but they are; however, doing all they can to be clean and pure before their Maker. We may feel unworthy of such an event, because of the filthiness of our sins but we too can be clean before Him. We can be sure of this when we feel of His spirit and witness miracles that we know are only possible through Him. Sure we aren't perfect but we are trying right? So, "lift up your heads and rejoice."

Spirit was strong throughout each spiritual thought shared. It was awesome, I didn't want to leave. When the missionaries finished both the husband and wife took time to tell us their plans for the year to help active, less-active, and potential members. They are so awesome!!

Saturday was busy. We had several less-actives to visit, but no one was home. We dropped cookies and message cards off at a number of houses. I'm sad that not one person was home today. Bummer! At the end of the day we met all the missionaries for the ward, the bishop, and our ward mission leader at the church for a meeting. I was asked to share my testimony before we began. I did my best. It was all about my personal study that morning in Doctrine and Covenants section 115. This section is instruction of how the saints should build The Lord's temple. The Lord essentially says that if it is done in His instructed order, then He will accept it. Even though this is literally talking about a temple to remembered the comparison often used is that our body's temples too. This morning I pondered if I were to meet my maker today, would He accept my 'temple?' Anyway, the meeting went well and it was nice to have Bishop there to participate and help all the missionaries.

Sunday was an interesting day. On our way to church, Sister Tovar started a conversation with a man and woman walking the same direction as us. I kept the conversation going and the wife thought I was so cute. Her and her husband would not stop saying how beautiful I was haha. The said they wanted us over to their house because we were so charming. So we went. I warned them we only had about 20 minutes, but they didn't care. They ushered us in, prepared a drink that may or may not have been alcoholic (I really have no idea), and called their children downstairs to greet their "new friends" haha. The wife was so concentrated on my name tag and kept asking who we were. I asked Sister Tovar to introduce us and they loved it. I was anticipating to teach the first lesson on the spot but they ended up not having a lot of interest. Soon it was time to head to church and the family walked us out. It was a strange yet rewarding experience.

Once at church, the meetings were fine. Our investigator 신숙희S (Sister Shin) didn't show up even though she promised to come. I was really disappointed. By relief society I had prepared a sheet for women to sign up for Sister Tovar to practice teaching 20 minutes lessons. Five people signed up!! I was shocked! So excited! Immediately after we left with 이자영S (Sister Lee) to eat dinner together at her house. It was the best! Sister Lee is so thoughtful because she made Mexican tacos just for my little Mexican companion and me. haha. It was delicious and it was a lot of fun talking with her. She is such a strong woman! This last year she lost her father and has had some traumatic experiences with trying to get pregnant. Through it all she is the happiest and most giving person! She told us that she needs help being patient and submitting to God's will. However, I can for sure learn something from her in that regard before I will ever be able to teach or help ha. It was a great night with her. I was bummed that tonight Sister Tovar and I didn't reach our conversation goal for the week but hopefully next week will be better. Overall, today was well spent.

This week had its ups and downs. I'm really struggling to love and appreciate my companion, pray for me! Despite that, I am really loving the ward I am in. These members are awesome!! I love them and I love you all. Thank you for all of your support. Have a fantastic week~

More Challenges with Sister Tovar

12/30/2013-1/5/2014
Monday was quite the morning. First I finally convinced my companion to let me run outside!! 2 miles down today! It was hard running in circles (8 laps around our park equals one mile...) and on snow but it was so fun! I was so happy when I finished until it came time for companionship study. Yesterday at the ward dinner, Sister Tovar was pulled aside by a member to talk about our companionship. Of course we aren't best friends but I was a little annoyed that this member thought it was her business to pry. From a distance as I cleaned up dinner, I saw my companion crying. I gave her time to cool off but this morning I asked what was wrong. Long story short, at first she denied that there were problems and then as I pushed, things came to light. Ugh! What am I doing so wrong?! I really wonder why she has such a hard time talking to me first instead of President Morrise, her friends, or ward members. Anyway, our extra time spent with "companionship inventory" took up the rest of our study time. Not a fun way to start PDAY.

We emailed at our usual PC 방 where we met up with the elders. Together we ate lunch at Pizza School, ew. Next we met a majority of the zone to go to a museum near our church. It was all about the Suwon wall and the king that built it. It was a tiny museum but it was still interesting. Most of our day was gone after that and Sister Tovar still had errands to run. The zone ate dinner together while my companion and I went to get her hair cut, buy groceries for the house, and print pictures. By the end of PDAY we ate dinner and went straight to the church where we met Estee and a few YSA members for FHE. It was a lot of fun. We played telephone charades...totally embarrassing but super hilarious. It was a blast!

Tuesday morning I only had time to run one mile but still the cold air outside really wakes me up! I love it. My personal study was so much more effective because my mind was so alert. I love running. After we studied we had an appointment with our new investigator. We were again meeting at 정인자S (Sister Jeong)'s house where our investigator is the house keeper. Along with Sister Jeong, her daughter-in-law, from the ward, 강인경S (Sister Kang) came. I was pretty stoked for the lesson until we received some news as we arrived. When we walked in the investigator asked us why we came. I replied that he had made an appointment. She then said, "Yes, but remember when I called you?" This is where the misunderstanding took place. Apparently when she called she wasn't trying to reschedule for a different time like I thought, instead she had told me that she didn't care about hearing our message and to never come back. Brutal huh? From her nice tone on the phone I would have never guess that she would have said that. By the time we heard this we were already inside and sitting down talking. It was awkward. Sister Tovar was pretty oblivious to the situation as she continued to try and talk with the member and the daughter-in-laws 2 year old. We eventually nixed the lesson and just shared a spiritual thought and left. I was so disappointed!!

I feel awful because receiving a referral is rare. What is even more rare are member referrals! Sister Tovar and I finally received one but somehow found a way to screw things up. I feel so bad especially because a story from the Bible kept coming to mind- the story about the Widow's Mite. This story illustrates a woman who literally is willing to give everything she has. This poor woman in our ward, Sister Jeong does not leave her home. She is not able to do anything on her own. However she puts that all aside and the missionary. Literally the only person that she interacts with during the day was this investigator who she introduced to us. She had been working hard to prepare this woman but when she brought the missionaries into the picture- we failed. I feel responsible because I know that The Lord places people on our paths with those whom we can teach. And I know for a fact that this woman is far beyond my capability (Korean wise) at this point.

If that wasn't enough rejection for one day, I decided to make some phone calls to a few potential investigators. Yesterday I received three numbers.... The first was a wrong number, the second said she had no time, and the third said (in very rude low form, mind you) that she didn't care to learn anything from me. Sweet. By the end of the day I was feeling a little defeated. However, we still had English class. Five students showed and guess what? They are the happiest people I've interacted all day. I've decided that I want litters and litters of children because they are so unbelievable. Two students in particular ran up to hug me when they arrived. I love them so much! My night was turned around to say the least. To add a cherry on top of this mess-of-a-cake-day when I gave the closing prayer, a few people verbally said, "Wow! That is the best prayer I have every heard from you." #confidenceboost!!

To ring in the new year, Sister Tovar and I quickly got ready for bed in order to had a movie night! Haha... Well... as much as missionaries can. I plugged in our 2x2 inch DVD player,  hooked up speakers that were about three times the size of the DVD player, and we watched a DVD of Mormon Messages. It was a very different experience for New Years Eve but I have to say it was one for the books. We even had our own ball-drop-boom right at midnight just outside our house. By that I mean a bunch of drunk idiots ran down the street screaming haha.

Wednesday, HAPPY NEW YEAR!! This morning I was able to run just under two miles this morning. Last year my father reached his goal of running 500 miles and that motivated me to do he same this year. 1.5 down 498.5 to go haha! After studies was the usual district meeting. Today we listened to an awesome talk by Brad Wilcox called 'His. Grace is Sufficient.' I have listened to it before but it reminded me of a favorite scripture of mine- Doctrine and Covenants 3:10.

"But remember, God is merciful; therefore, repent of that which thou hast done which is contrary to the commandment which I gave you, and thou art still chosen, and art aagain called to the work"

Maybe the repentance process seems too hard or you might feel inadequate to receive forgiveness but I want you to remember that the task ahead of you will never be as powerful as the power that is behind you. Remember that Jesus Christ is your brother. He will always be on your side. Let me repeat, He will always be by your side. It's up to you to let Him in and to let Him help.

When training ended I attempted to pass off the second lesson, The Plan of Salvation. It was pretty bad haha. Luckily time ran out so I will study hard tonight and finish another day. When it was time for dinner, all the missionaries went to 박삼곤B (Brother Park)'s house. Him and his wife are UH-MAZING cooks. 잘머겄습니다!! I ate very well!! The rest of the day was normal missionary work. It was fun.

Thursday was another lame start to the day. One hour of our studies is spent with the 12 week training program. This program requires new missionaries to practice a lot of teaching situation via role play. Today Sister Tovar wasn't really in the mood and it showed. I hate role play too but she had a super bad attitude so I made an executive decision to end early. On our way out of the house we weren't talking. It was rough. As we walked we passed a church that we walk by everyday. Today they were having a fellowshipping activity where they invited everyone in to eat kimchee pancakes. We were treated the same and brought in to socialize and eat. It was fun. When we finished we thanked all the women. Just as we waved our last goodbye I turned around to be attacked by one of my English class students. He gave me the biggest hug. Hugging the opposite sex really isn't allowed for missionaries but this boy is 10 and I love him so much. I hugged him back, had a quick conversation until he ran off to play in the snow. That really brightened my day. Not only me but Sister Tovar was happier too. Thank you Heavenly Father for the series of tender mercies to help me Sister Tovar be happy missionaries today.

We went about our business finding more less-active members and talking to people on the way. Our success was at a minimum but at least we were happy. Before dinner I had another meeting with Elder Breckwoldt to do pass off. Since last time was so bad I started over but we didn't have time to finish again. Even though that was the case I still felt like I did much better teaching even with zero notes. I love Korean!! I am starting to be able to speak a little more freely of what I think. I love it. Elder Breckwoldt even commented on my closing prayer. Like the other night at English class he said, "Wow, Sister Sloan, if you pray all day like that you will be fluent in no time!" 아싸!! After was dinner then English class. It was a good day.

Friday was strange. First we met at the church to create a new English flyer. It took forever! By about 2PM Sister Tovar and I were able to do our weekly planning. We finished quickly and had a glorious nap after dinner. Sleep is so hard to catch up on as a missionary but I have really come to love my cat naps after meals. Once we were out the door, we had a very productive evening. We had an appointment with 서은효S (Summer) again. This time instead of staying to talk we walked in, stood in the door way and asked if she would come with us to do less-active visits. At first she was a little taken back. But with our persistence, she grabbed her coat and we were off.

Summer is an awesome lady! Sister Tovar and I really love her. Lately we have been at a loss of what we can do to show her how much we love her. She is very insecure so it's hard to get it through her head. So tonight Sister Tovar and I thought it would be a good idea to show her how much each member means to us. The members really don't understand how much effort we put forth to find their houses, travel, and prepare an individual spiritual thought for them but when we arrive all we receive in return is rejection. Summer was amazing and so tired after just an hour and a half with us. Over and over she told us that we were angels and that she wanted our mission president's number to tell him how much we need a car and especially a GPS haha.  We ended our evening with red bean-filled fish bread and hot chocolate. It was such a fun night.

Saturday was a boring day. All of our appointments cancelled so Sister Tovar and I did a lot of address confirming with little luck. No one was home and the people whom we spoke with on the street didn't seem to care today. By the end of the day we had a missionary coordination meeting. 이재현B (Brother Lee), our ward mission leader, brought us all McDonalds again. It was decent but if this is a weekly thing.... I don't know how big of a fan I will be. Don't get me wrong, I am grateful but I love Korean food so much more than fatty McDonalds. Anyway, our day ended the same way it began- boring.

Sunday, fast Sunday. It was the best church service I've been to yet! First we met a less-active member 오음숙S (Sister Oh) and her very active YSA son, 정태호B (Brother Jeong) for a short lesson before church. This family joined the church as a result of the father just falling in love with everything about it. After he died of cancer a few years ago Sister Oh and her youngest son became less-active. However, last night I received a very excited phone call from Brother Jeong saying that his mother finally agreed to come back to church, all he needed was our help. We will meet every Sunday before church to teach a little bit of the doctrine so she can come to love this gospel as much as her husband and son do. So great!

Next was sacrament! Three less-active members that we have been visiting showed up today, including Summer! It was an excellent testimony meeting. Most of the missionaries took a few minutes to bear their testimonies. I was the very last to share because as I sat in line people would ask to go first... I am a missionary, I cannot imagine saying no to someone haha. Anyway, it was over time so I was brief. Even under pressure to wrap up quickly I was so surprised how easy the words came. This was a good weekend for my Korean skillz.

The other meetings went well and immediately following relief society, 강윤숙S (Sister Kang) grabbed us and told us we were coming over for dinner. Booyah! Her husband was busy with his stake calling so she asked another member to drive us all to her house. I played rock, paper, scissors with the kids the whole way. I love kids. When we arrived Sister Tovar and I helped set the table. We ate so well!! 잘머겄습니다! Just after our spiritual message and prayer, Sister Kang told us to wait before putting on our coats. She came out from her closet with a number of shirts and skirts for Sister Tovar to try on. Too cute! My poor companion was the opposite of stoked when she was the only one offered clothes. Oh well it is was Sister Kang's way of becoming her friend. It was hilarious translating and withholding some comments to keep Sister Tovar's spirit up. Man I am so impressed how much I understand now a days. I have tried so long to be patient and hope this understand would come, it finally has. I hope I don't get humbled anytime soon because I am really enjoying this.

Hope all is well. All is well here, it was a fantastic week. I love you and miss you!
